In breaking news, Leighton has another tooth that's popped through the gums: her upper front left tooth. No wonder she's been a little fussy the past couple of nights!

1 No more crazy hair
Well it's true: Leighton's hair doesn't stick straight up anymore. I didn't realize it until my mom pointed it out earlier. That snuck up on me. I sort of miss it!

3 Not one good picture!
I haven't posted in a week because I really haven't gotten any great pictures of Leighton. Regardless, I've decided to share what I do have. Leighton continues to use her sippy cup...we haven't used a bottle since she took that cup last week. Exciting! (And, I'll admit, a little sad.) Leighton FINALLY did something today that has me very excited: she learned how to lie down in her crib! She's been sitting up at nap time and falling asleep slumped over. Well today, she figured it out. I was so excited I wanted to run in there with my camera and take a picture, but I decided to let her sleep. We're maxing out at about an hour with her nap time. I think it's the best I can hope for, considering she sleeps so long at night.
On Saturday, we went over to Shelly's house to visit our good friend Amy and see Shelly's little girl, Ava. Ava and Leighton were intrigued with each other. Unfortunately, neither one of them was intrigued with my camera at the same time (meaning I didn't get any pictures of them both looking at me).

So Leighton is so joyful in the morning when we go in to get her, that I decided to take my camera in this morning and get a picture of it. NOT! She might be getting a cold, because it looked like she had been slimed on her face, and I think the camera flash surprised her. Needless to say, this isn't the face we usually wake up to. We've been wiping her nose all evening. (I'm bracing for a long, fussy night.)
Here Leighton is with her baby crack, aka Yogurt Melts. She WANTS these yogurt melts. She finds them in her diaper bag and hands me the bag. She points to them in the kitchen cabinet. She spazzes when she sees she's going to get some. And I have to admit, I'm becoming pretty addicted to them too.

Sometimes I give her the bag and see what she'll do. She grabs as many as she can and tries to shove them all in her mouth. (So I don't hand her the bag often.)
Tonight I gave her meatloaf for the first time. I realized that she doesn't really eat a lot of meat, so I thought I'd give it a try and see. She liked it. She actually really seems to like most things. This will probably change as we make our way through all the food options out there, but I'm pretty pleased so far. The past couple of days, she's started to point to the food item she wants me to give her next at the table (she often points at applesauce or her Yo Baby). It's really neat to see her communicate with us.

That's all I've got. I told you the pictures weren't that stunning, but I think it's likely the grandparents and aunt and uncles don't really care!

2 Sippy cups and boots
We had a major breakthrough today! After a couple of months of throwing the sippy cup on the floor and generally being disgusted with it, Leighton (at least for today) LOVED her sippy cup. She kept picking it up and shoving it at me so I would help her drink from it. And then after she would take a sip, she would just giggle and giggle and want to do it again. Yay! So much fun.
And tonight...drumroll please. For the first time since she was born, Leighton did NOT have a bottle before going to bed. She had a sippy cup! With milk in it. And I realize she doesn't really need it, but I'm proud that we at least graduated from the bottle (at least for today).
Also, while she was drinking from her sippy cup, she and Chad were watching Dora the Explorer and as many of you know, Dora's little monkey friend's name is Boots. Leighton said "boots" several times! Chad and I couldn't believe it! So add that to her list of words.

I hope the sippy cup love lasts. It's possible we have every brand of sippy cup (in my attempts to get her to like them), so I hope we can finally put them to use.

2 Today's nap
This picture is priceless! I told you Leighton has not been napping lately. She sits up and then doesn't know how to get back down again to sleep. She's fallen asleep a couple of times sitting up, but when I've tried to sneak in to get a picture, she's woken up. But not today! I crept into her room SO quietly (it took about 10 minutes to get in there at the rate I was moving) and I got this picture of her fast asleep. This can't be comfortable!
I didn't think we'd have the chance to get her in this little hat again, but the cold front in Houston warranted busting it out. She tried to take it off, but couldn't get the velcro undone.

3 All smiles
I realized I have been writing a lot about what we've been doing, but not so much about what Leighton is doing. So I thought I should dedicate a post to that.
She'll be 14 months old in 9 days. It's so cliche, but I can't believe how time flies. Leighton is pure joy right now...all smiles and happy and so fun to watch and be around. Here's what is going on in her world right now.
She hasn't been napping...she sits up right away when we put her down; sometimes she falls asleep this way. She kind of looks like a bum on the side of the street passed out when she does this. For the most part, this is what she looks like while she naps:
She colors, which involves taking out all the crayons and putting them on the floor. She understands you put the crayon to the paper, but she puts the wrong end and doesn't make much of a mark. But she's terribly proud of herself, and so am I. I'm ashamed to admit that my old love for coloring has fired up. I even have my own coloring book that I don't let Leighton color in (so she doesn't mess up my work). How sad is that!

She points at everything and wiggles her pointer finger. (If you are familiar with the movie "The Shining" with Jack Nicholson, the little boy Danny does something similar while saying "redrum.")
She really, really likes Gerber Yogurt Melts and hands us the bag when she wants more. (This is exciting because it is one of the first ways she's communicated a "want" with us.)
She understands "no" and looks at us with a curious expression...and actually stops doing what she was doing (I know this won't last long when she starts testing her boundaries, but I'll enjoy it for now).
She's no longer eating baby food! I put a lot of effort into making sure she's eating all healthy food that's organic. It's challenging having to come up with something for every meal, but it makes me happy to do it. Some of the foods she's eating:

She's afraid of balloons and any kind of blown-up thing. She has actually cried at balloons and a blow-up animal.
She drinks out of regular people cups rather than sippy cups, which she isn't a big fan of.
She says mama, dada, meow, and uh-oh.
She's only had three boo-boos so far. The first one I never wrote about because I felt so bad, but I'm over it now. The night before her birthday, she rolled off her changing table (I was standing right there and Chad was also in the room). We rushed her to the doctor, who said this happens all the time (and she was fine). This week, the dishwasher fell on her head, and she also slipped while crawling and hit her head on the door. Both minor incidents. I know someday when she's much older and she does something stupid, I will blame it on one of these three things. (Probably that first one.)
Her favorite book right now: "CAT" by Matthew Van Fleet.
We've given up all but her nightly bottle...not sure when we'll make the move to give that one up. I sure wish she would drink out of a sippy cup, cause I'd switch her over to that if I could.

I couldn't have asked her to pose better for this picture. It's a great view of those bottom teeth!
Leighton loves to throw herself on her pillow. I'm sure it's because she's so tired from not napping!
The latest excitement...she's pulled herself up to standing twice! At any moment I know she's going to be standing and then walking. Yikes! For now, she's definitely pulling up to her knees and you can see she's trying so hard to figure out how to get all the way up.

One more update: We went to her pediatric orthopedist today for her 4-month checkup since the brace came off. He did x-rays and she looks great! We don't ever have to go back. Yippee!

Breakfast: banana oatmeal, Yo Baby, eggs, mini blueberry waffles, applesauce
Lunch/Dinner: Grilled cheese sandwich, steamed broccoli, potato (mashed, chopped), sweet potato (mashed, chopped), zucchini, squash, carrots, orzo, chicken, homemade mac and cheese
Plum organics (I get it at Central Market) makes this Banana peach rice pudding that Leighton loves). I also got this cookbook "Superfoods for Babies and Children" that has a lot of great recipes for kids grouped by age. I've made some orzo with a bunch of vegetables and even mushrooms. I also made some homemade rice pudding. It's nice to have some new ideas!

0 Memorial Park
We went to Memorial Park this morning with the Richardsons. It was such a beautiful day and we got there at the perfect time of day. Leighton had on this adorable little dress and bloomers and I was so happy to have something for us to do outside in the fresh air.
Gordon spent most of the time running all over the place, but he came back to us every now and then to blow bubbles.

Leighton sure loves Leslie. She kept reaching out to her and ended up finding a very comfortable position for herself in Leslie's ever-shrinking lap (Leslie is due with boy #2 in June).

Leslie found our stroller quite a comfortable place to sit for a while. She's probably one of the few adults I know who could sit in it without breaking it! Tiny Leslie!

This is pretty much what I saw of Gordon while we were there. Leslie says she can't wait for the day when Leighton is running all over the place. I can!

Leighton enjoyed running her hands through the grass and throwing leaves. Why on earth I continue to buy toys when she's perfectly happy with dirt, I don't know.
